Computer imaging to read face to detect threat

Toronto, Oct 2 (IANS) An Indian-origin computer
scientist at Concordia University in Montreal is developing a computer
imaging process that will read expressions on a human face to know that
person's motives and intentions.

The system will classify these expressions to let analysts know whether that individual posed any public threat.

A
university statement said Prof Prabir Bhattacharya and his graduate
student Abu Sayeed Sohail were on the verge of developing this computer
image processing system for detecting and classifying human facial
expressions.

It said this system will help take and analyse
photos of individuals, potentially in areas of high traffic where
security is a primary concern, such as an airport.

``If one could
take random photos of the crowd and process them fast enough, there is
the potential to identify those individuals who might be problematic,''
the statement said.

While detecting facial expressions, the system will focus on muscles under the face near the eyes, nose and mouth.

``Bhattacharya
and Sohail's system measures 15 key points on the face and then
compares these measures against images of identifiable facial
expressions,'' the statement said.

Even though individuals and
cultures vary in facial expressions in myriad ways, Bhattacharya and
Sohail have identified seven basic facial expressions which all humans
share.

These seven universal expressions will help the computer
imaging process to classify them and then know whether that individual
posed any threat.

The results of their yet-to-be concluded
research have been published as Classification of Human Facial
Expression: A Prospective Application of Image Processing and Machine
Learning.

Now, a computer 'guardian' to protect users from undiscovered bugs

Washington, October 2 (ANI): University of Michigan
researchers have come up with a system that can enable computer chips
to work around all functional bugs, including the ones that have not
been detected as yet.

Their idea is to build a virtual fence that prevents a chip from operating in untested configurations.

The
researchers say that their approach keeps track of all the
configurations Intel processor may encounter, and loads the information
onto a minuscule monitor that would be added to each processor.

According to them, the monitor called a semantic guardian would keep the chip operating within its virtual fence.

The
researchers have revealed that the system works by switching the
processor into a slower, bare-bones, safe mode when the chip encounters
a configuration that has not been validated.

They say that the monitor would treat all untested configurations as potential threats.

"If
you consider all the possible configurations of the processor, only a
tiny fraction of them is verified. But that tiny portion accounts for
the configurations that occur 99.9 percent of the time," said Valeria
Bertacco, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science.

"Users wouldn't even notice
when their processor switched to safe mode. It would happen
infrequently, and it would only last momentarily, to get the computer
through the uncharted territory. Then the chip would flip back to its
regular mode," Bertacco said.

The researchers say that their
system would be akin to turning a motorcycle into a bicycle briefly
when a rider encounters a rough patch of road, and thus a chip in safe
mode would still operates properly and perform all necessary functions.

The
guardian would take only a small fraction of the microprocessor's area
with a imperceptible performance impact, which the researchers assert
is a small price to pay to eliminate the risks of buggy hardware.

The
group is upbeat that this approach may also protect against the misuse
of hardware design bugs by hackers to gain control of other computers.

"Semantic
guardians would stop these security attackers dead in their tracks,
since the processor would no longer be able to execute the buggy
configurations that they were planning to exploit, said Ilya Wagner, a
doctoral student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science.

A presentation on this research was made at the
Gigascale System Research Center's annual meeting, where industry and
government funding agencies come together to learn about new research
results, on September 29. (ANI)

Internet, a 'blessing' for long distant lovers!

London, July 17 (ANI): With communication getting
easier day-by-day, the Internet is turning out to be a blessing for
people involved in long distance relationships, shows a new survey.

According to the study, social networking websites have led to a boom in long-distance relationships.

Some
14 per cent of people quizzed said they were dating a partner who lives
more than two hours' drive away - double the rate of ten years ago.

More
than three-quarters of them said it was now far easier to enjoy a
long-distance relationship - thanks to networking sites, videophone
calls and text messaging.

And 10 per cent of the 2,000 adults polled admitted dating people they met through Internet dating or social websites.

One in four had begun a relationship over the net at some point.

But
telephone remains the most common way to stay in touch during a
long-distance relationship. It was followed by text and email, the
report by BT found.

"The world is getting smaller all the time as
communication gets more efficient - causing this boom," The Sun quoted

Christina Applegate revealed that she did an emotional nude photo shoot
before undergoing double mastectomy - to keep a fond memory of the twin
assts she was losing.

The actress, who was diagnosed with cancer
earlier this year, gave the go-ahead to her doctor to remover her
breasts to stop the disease from spreading.

The 'Anchorman' star
revealed on Oprah Winfrey's U.S. talk show that she especially went
through the emotional shoot to remember them.

"I did my first and last nudie photo shoot at home," the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

"I made sure that I have close-up photographs of them from every angle, so I can kind of remember them," she added.

The
actress further said that post operation she is disheartened since her
fake 'expanders' looked nothing like her natural breasts.

She
said: "You've got scarring and there's a lot of things you're
missing... and the shape is not the same and it doesn't feel the same
and it's hard to carry your purse and there are so many limitations.

"It's sad. I cry at least once a day about it because it's hard to overlook it when you're standing there in the mirror."

However, despite the agony and stress, the actress lifted her spirits joking: "I don't have to wear a bra... ever again." (ANI)

Smokers Beware...! Dont lose your money

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) Smokers beware! The
government is empowering school principals, postmen, railway
stationmasters, even your boss to book you if you're caught smoking in
a public place after Oct 2 - the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The health ministry has already sent the rule for gazette notification and will make it public in the second week of September.

'The
government is yet to approve a fine of Rs.2,000 for those caught
smoking in public,' said a senior health ministry official. 'So we are
implementing the new Smoking in Public Places Rules 2008 with the old
fine amount - up to Rs.200.'

The new rule will also expand the
definition of public places from government buildings to include all
office buildings, hospitals, schools, colleges, railway stations,
airports, bus stands, hotels and restaurants.

'With the public
notification, we will empower principals of schools, colleges, station
masters, postman, airport authorities to challan (book) those smoking
in public places. Once caught, the smoker will have to pay Rs.200 or
whatever he has if he is carrying less than that amount,' the official
told IANS.

'These people have better access to public places and
their involvement will work as community participation to reduce
smoking in the country.

'The public notification will empower top
officials in private firms to challan their employees. The challan
money will go to the revenue department of the state government
concerned,' the official added.

The modalities will be finalised before the public notification.

To
start the process, the official said, in the last one week they fined
eight employees of the Nirman Bhawan, the building that houses the
health ministry, urban development ministry, and some other government
offices.

Hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives due to
smoking related diseases in India every year. They are at risk from all
cardio-vascular diseases like heart attack and stroke and cancer.

Government
estimates say that though the tobacco industry brings revenue of Rs.270
billion to the country every year, the treatment cost of the disease
burden is at least Rs.300 billion.

The health ministry official
said the public prohibition would come into force from Oct 2, the birth
anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has
been campaigning for years to stop smoking in public places and making
India a smoke free country.

The ministry said that with the new
rules coming into force, all hotels with at least 30 rooms and
restaurants with a sitting capacity of 30 will be barred from allowing
their guests to smoke. 'They may come up with a smoking lounge but it
will be mandatory that smoke from inside the lounge must not affect
people outside it.'

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -
India banned smoking in public places on Thursday in an attempt to
fight tobacco use blamed, directly or indirectly, for a fifth of all
deaths in the world's third-largest consumer.

The ban, which
includes all offices and restaurants, will hit its estimated 240
million tobacco users, who are likely to find their homes and cars
among the last few places to light up.

The government cites the
economic costs and the need to stem the loss of human lives but tobacco
firms say the ban infringes on individual rights.

Everyone
agrees, though, that implementing the ban could be a problem and much
will depend on compliance rather than enforcement.

The ban
includes schools and colleges, pubs and discotheques, hospitals and bus
stops. Offenders will be fined 200 rupees ($4). On average, a packet of
cigarettes costs around 50 rupees.

"Don't wait for enforcing
authorities to catch you," said Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss who
has long championed a ban on tobacco, urging Bollywood actors not to
encourage smoking by lighting up on screen.

Past attempts to ban
spitting and urinating in public in India have drawn little success,
and the impoverished and lawless state of Bihar has already expressed
reservations about the practicalities of implementing the ban.

While rules limiting advertising, marketing and sales existed before, implementation was not very effective.

Not
everyone is happy with the ban. Many say a lack of smoking rooms mean
they would be deprived of a stress-busting puff in offices and other
public places.

"The intention may be good, but are we a nanny
state?" asked Sanjay Yadav, a furtive puffer on a New Delhi road. He
said the ban could be an incentive for those smokers wanting to quit.

Rajesh
Kumar, a tobacco products seller, says he did not expect sales to drop.
"Smokers will smoke," he said, adding he hoped to continue selling
about 50 packets a day he sold now.

Hitting back at the tobacco
industry, Sian Griffiths, public health professor at the Chinese
University of Hong Kong, said a debate about rights must balance the
greater good against the rights of the individual.

"If you look at other countries where smoking has been banned in public places, it has only done good, not harm," he said.

BIG BUCKS

Official figures say that with its 240 million tobacco users India has annual cigarette sales of about 102 billion sticks.

But that is still a small market compared to China's, where, says the WHO, one of every three cigarettes in the world is smoked.

With
cigarette sales growing at an average annual rate of about 5-6 percent,
ICICI Securities estimates, India is one of the few world markets to
show growth in cigarette consumption.

So, much is at stake for India's top cigarette maker, ITC Ltd, which has challenged the ban in court.

The case is scheduled to come up in Supreme Court on Nov. 18, an ITC spokesman said.

With the ban, India follows countries such as Britain, France, South Africa and Thailand.

Worldwide,
more than five million people die of tobacco related illnesses now.
This, the WHO says, will rise to more than eight million in the next 20
years, most of them coming from low and middle income countries such as
India.

Many farmers who traditionally grew pulses and millets and paddy have been lured by seed companies to buy hybrid cotton seeds and other GM crops, which were supposed to make their lives easier and wealthier. Instead they faced bankruptcy and ruin.

Their native seeds have been displaced with new hybrids which cannot be saved and need to be purchased every year at a high cost. Hybrids are also very vulnerable to pest attacks. All pesticides have to be bought from the company that sold them the seeds; there have been reports of blatant profiteering from these companies.

It is experiences such as these which tell me that we are so wrong to be smug about the new global economy. It is time to stop and think about the impact of globalization on the lives of ordinary people. This is vital if we want to achieve sustainability.

We are repeatedly told that without genetic engineering and globalization of agriculture the world will starve, it is constantly promoted as the only alternative available for feeding the hungry.

Everywhere, food production is becoming a negative economy, with farmers spending more buying costly inputs for industrial production than the price they receive for their produce. The consequence is rising debts and epidemics of suicides in both rich and poor countries. Cows in the European Union receive on average $2 per day in subsidies. Over 1 billion people live in the world on less than $1 dollar a day.

Farmers in the Third World are encouraged by the IMF and the World Bank to produce cash crops for export. There are usually commodities that can be easily bought and sold on the World Markets. With fluctuating world prices, Fair trade is what can drag farmers and communities out of poverty. In some African countries it is cheaper to buy American sugar and coffee than it is to buy locally produced goods. This is because of over production and subsidies in the West which means that they then dump these goods on Africa destroying local markets.

When patents are granted to companies for seeds and plants, as in the case of basmati, saving and sharing seed is defined as theft of intellectual property. Corporations which have broad patents on crops such as cotton, soya bean and mustard are suing farmers for seed-saving and hiring detective agencies to find out if farmers have saved seed or shared it with neighbours.

As Gandhi reminded us, "The Earth has enough for everyone's needs, but not for some people's greed."

Phobias & Fears – You Can Eliminate Them With Hypnosis

DEFINITION AND SYMPTOMS OF PHOBIAS:
A phobia is defined as an irrational fear. When a person has a phobic attack, they get panicky feelings; their respiration and heart rates increase; they may feel choked up like their heart is in their throat; their palms often get sweaty; they may hear the sound of ringing in their ears; and they very often find that they are unable to participate in an activity. These feelings cause the individual to avoid the situations and places that trigger them.

SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF COMMON PHOBIAS:
For instance, if someone has a driving phobia, they would exhibit these symptoms when they attempt to drive a car, or maybe even when they just think about driving. Or a terror attack may well ensue simply when driving in specific places like in heavy traffic.

The fear of talking in front of a group of people is a very common phobia. The phobic feelings appear when the person tries to talk in front of a person that they are intimidated by, or they might well experience phobic feelings only while in front of a group of other people. The size of the crowd will vary. This irrational fear can be triggered by fears of inadequacy, or a lack of self-esteem.

Those who suffer from social phobias can get horrifically nervous just being around other people, even folks that they recognize. It is a fear that they will be criticized or evaluated by other people. This fear can be triggered in almost any type of social interaction. A person could be standing on line at a supermarket and get stressful feelings as they imagine having to talk to the cashier as they checkout.

The fear of taking tests (which is frequently known as test anxiety) is a frequent phobia. A phobia to taking tests is rooted in comparing yourself to other people, and is deeply rooted in a fear of failing.

People have experienced irrational fears to every category of experience under the sun. For example: Snakes; bugs; relationships; flying; small enclosed places; animals; high places; death; and even the great outdoors.

Agoraphobia is generally considered to be a fear of open spaces. However, this definition is extremely deceptive because Agoraphobics are really afraid of having a panic attack, wherever they may happen to be. This phobia is developed when a person begins to avoid places or situations they have associated with anxiety. For example, they could have a panic attack at the drycleaners, at home, or at a supermarket.

For many, once their panic attacks have started to occur, they begin to expect them to come about. And this expectation actually causes them to occur with increasing frequency. Other people experience fearful feelings on a continuous basis. These feelings cause an overall sense of discomfort, rather than panic.

FORMS OF TREATMENT THAT ARE AVAILABLE

DRUGS:
Some doctors care for their patients by means of sedatives, which can make the condition worse over prolonged treatment. Sedatives do not work on the core cause of a phobia; they only camouflage some of the symptoms.

TALK THERAPY:
Some schools of therapy prescribe "Talk Therapy." Talk therapy is only talking about what is bothering you. Unfortunately, thinking about or talking about the situation or environment that causes a phobic attach can trigger a phobic attack!

HYPNOTHERAPY:
Traditional self hypnosis has been used to treat phobias, but with only meager success. Traditional hypnotherapy is accomplished when the hypnotherapist guides the client into a relaxed state of self hypnosis and gives the patient post-hypnotic commands or suggestions. Since most people of our generation question and resist direct suggestions, they also reject the concept that they will be more relaxed and at ease when they encounter the situation or environment that sets off their panic attacks.

SYSTEMATIC DESENSITIZATION:
Systematic Desensitization is the practice of gradually desensitizing a phobic person to the circumstances or environment that causes a phobic attack. For instance, if a woman wants to dive from a high diving board but she fears it, she is asked to first dive from a height that she feels confident about. She dives in and realizes that she did not get hurt and that she is safe.

Next she is asked to dive in from the first step of the ladder going up to the high diving board. Again, she dives in and realizes that nothing bad happened and that she is again safe and secure.

Over a period of time the phobic is asked to dive in from gradually higher and higher steps on the ladder. Each time she dives in and realizes that nothing bad happened and that she is safe and secure, she is able to move up to the next rung of the ladder. If she experiences the sensation of fear, then she's asked to move back down one rung on the ladder and dive from there until she feels complete comfort and security. In the end she makes it to the top of the ladder and dives in from the high board.

SYSTEMATIC DESENSITIZATION WHILE IN THE STATE OF HYPNOSIS:
Systematic Desensitization can be done literally while in a hypnotic state with as good as or better results. While in a relaxed hypnotized state, the woman would be asked to visualize herself diving in from each rung of the ladder. She would be asked to picture herself feeling confident and relaxed as she dives in. Since she is in fact disassociated while picturing herself, she is unable to experience a phobic attack.

Next she's asked to associate, or put the camera inside of her head so she would be seeing what she would see through her eyes if she was actually diving in from each step of the ladder. She is asked to imagine feeling safe and relaxed as she dives in.

Just as in a live (in vivo) systematic desensitization, if she feels any panic she's told to go back to the previous lower step on the ladder and picture diving in from there.

She might be taught to create a kinesthetic (feeling or touch) "anchor" for feelings of security and safety. She could then trigger that anchor while imagining that she's diving, and the feelings of security and safety could be subjectively transferred to the act of diving.

Systematic Desensitization while in hypnosis can be especially powerful and totally successful, but is can also be slow and take several hypnotic sessions to bring about a cure.

NLP (NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING) V/K DISASSOCIATION:
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the study of how we create our reality. The V/K stands for visual / kinesthetic. The V/K Disassociation is a technique that allows a trained NLP Practitioner to guide a subject through specific visual imagery that quickly and in many cases instantly disconnects or disassociates the feelings of fear from the irrational fear that causes them. The V/K Disassociation is known as the "One session phobia cure" in Neuro-Linguistic Programming circles, and with good cause.

CONCLUSION:
Phobias are very common in our society. They are fears that aren't based in reality. There are many techniques for treating phobias, but thus far in my opinion, the best treatments are Systematic Desensitization while in the hypnotic state, and the Neuro-Linguistic Programming V/K Disassociation technique.

What Does Your Man REALLY Want?

If there is one question for which every woman wants an answer is what men want. This question crops up in the mind of every woman be it be a teenager going on her first date; a newly wedded wife getting ready for her husband to return from work; a single woman waiting to find the right man; a divorcee trying to rebuild her life.

This question has been asked by women in the past, and will be asked by women in the future too. It is a question that has no easy answers; with each relationship being completely different from another. The best one can do is to explore seven subjects that form the cornerstone of any relationship between men and women. These subjects hold the key for any woman to understand what men want.

1. Sex
What do men want in sex?
How frequent should be lovemaking?
Should it be passionate?
Should women have sex before marriage?

There is little doubt that most men are obsessed with sex. It is a biological need, and men should not be blamed for wanting sex. However, sex alone cannot build a long lasting relationship. It can bring a couple together but it cannot hold them together beyond a certain point.

What a woman must understand is that a man finds happiness and fulfillment in sex. A woman who is willing to reach out and unite in the act of lovemaking is most likely to win a man than a woman who uses sex as a manipulative tool.

Also, men are not ogres. They don't go to women looking for sex alone. Most of them don't want their partners to degrade themselves when making love to them. They would rather like all acts of lovemaking to be complete and fulfilling to both.

Men, in fact, agonize more than women if they are unable to excite their partners. This is because men can be easily aroused whereas it takes longer, and more foreplay in the case of women to get aroused.

There is little doubt that a man would like to take a woman to bed as quickly as possible. But few men want to make love if they find their partners are unwilling. Most of them don't want to hurt or injure the feelings of a woman with whom they have developed a bonding or are in the process of doing so. Also, no man would insist on sex as a prerequisite to marriage.

Yes, every man has his fantasies about sex, and would like frequent and passionate sex with the woman he loves. One-night stands, as the name suggests, are only flings, not relationships.

2. Companionship
What kind of a companion does a man want?
How should women meet those needs?

Men want women with whom they can share their likes and dislikes, their fears and triumphs, their weaknesses and strengths... They want women who can empathize with their failures and revel in their triumphs.

Women who constantly find faults with their men are unlikely to win their love and respect. Every woman must remember that men are vain by nature. They need pampering, and even mothering. At the same time they need emotional fulfillment.

This does not mean that women have to become sports enthusiasts or political analysts to please their men. They only need to provide space to their men to follow their passions.

3. Homemakers
Should women be great cooks to win acceptance?
Should women alone be expected to keep house?
Is it a woman's job to rear kids?

Today's men respect the ambitions of women. They don't want to relegate their wives to the role of a domestic help. They would like their women to do well in life. However, they would not like this to happen at the cost of their own careers.

Most women must realize that every man wants to be the main breadwinner. His male ego gets hurt if he has to depend on his wife to run the home. He would certainly expect his wife to cook for him on at least three to four days a week. He would also expect women to keep the home clean and well kept. The best that a man is willing to do is to extend a helping hand. But the woman has to be the main homemaker.

4. Emotional support
Should women give advice?
Are men open to points of view given by women?

Once again the male ego is too vain. It is not willing to listen easily to the advice given by better halves. Almost every man goes on the defensive when the woman he loves wants to correct him. He may accept the same advice from another male; but would be very reluctant to do so from a woman.

Women should therefore be careful. They should make men feel they can climb Mount Everest, if need be. They must encourage them by constantly telling them how much confidence they have in them. This will bring the best out of every man.

5. Looks matter
Should women doll up for men?
Is a woman's figure important?
How important is it to dress up especially for men?

Men love beautiful women. They don't want their woman to look dowdy. This is not only true at the time of dating but even after marriage. Women who allow their figures to slip are likely to loose the interest of their men. This may sound sexist but this is how life is. An attractive woman, who knows how to carry herself, will always turn male heads.

6. Private space
Why do men need time for themselves?
Are they hiding something?
Shouldn't they share all their thoughts with me?

The best relationships are those where women are willing to wait; where they give time to their men to unwind themselves. They should not rush into their arms the moment they come home, and expect them to unburden themselves. Instead, they should wait for the right time when the man is more ready to share his inner thoughts. Even here, it is important to be patient, and encouraging. Money and success alone is not enough to satisfy a woman.

6. Love for surprises

No woman wants to be tied to home and children. She would like some excitement in her life. This is where men need to be imaginative and thoughtful. So in half a millennia we have witnessed human expression evolve through a number of cultures from the spoken word, to the written word, to print and now with electronic mediums our communication has developed to the current information age. Therefore in this era communication and visual culture are currently being redefined as they are subjected to the digital revolution. The internets effect on our transition of communication is forcing us to rethink text itself. Re-Formatting your MMC Card:

It is possible that your mobile will offer you the option of formatting the memory card if it is found to be invalid. (However, the likes of Nokia nGage, Nokia 6600, and Siemens Sx1 often just prefer to reject the media as corrupted).

In that case, to format the card, you will need access to one or more of the following:

> A Windows PC or Mac.
> A separate multi-format memory card reader (verify that it is compatible with the MultiMediaCard -MMC- standard).
> (This can come in USB or PCMCIA flavours. If USB, try and ensutre it is a USB2 device.
> Alternatively, many of the newest laptop and desktop PCs now come with integrated Multi-format memory card readers.
> If you are using a separate memory card reader, then connect it up to your PC, and let windows recgnize the device through plug-and-play.

Now you can insert your Memory card into the appropriate slot in the memory card reader. (Please note that because the MMC card is pretty much symmetrical it is very easy to insert it upside-down in the slot).

Open up [Windows Explorer]
There should b at least 1 icon visible 4 a [Removable Drive] in d list of available drives. (in fact,there is often a list of about 5 or 6 Removable drives,1 for each of the different Memory card formats tat ur reader is compatible wit).

Find d drive tat is mapped 2 d MMC card by clicking on each in turn until it confirms there is a drive present.(Sometimes it's easiest 2 do this by trying a fully-functional MMC card in the MMC slot first so u can confirm which drive letter it is.)

At this stage it may give an error message saying tat the drive is unreadable.
By right-clicking on d drive letter, it will provide the option of formatting d drive.

Select format the drive, and da [Format Drive] dialog will appear (Double-check again to make sure it not your [C:] drive!).

There is only one setting to focus on in this page, and that is to ensure that the FileSystem selected for formatting is the [FAT] option (not FAT32, or NTFS or any other option) Now click on Format Now (ensure [Quick Format] is not selected as this will not actually restore the file system space byte by byte,but only resets the header information so the drive thinks its empty again. This may not be enought to solve your corruption problem.)

The PC will now - hopefully!- chug away happily until it has restored the memory card space back to its original configuration (of course, any information on there is long gone by now!).

If you recieve an error message back from the [Format Now] request, then your problem may be more permanent, and not just a software issue. In this case, it may still respond to a format request in a different memory card reader or device.

If you believe it to be a failure of manufacture, then the warranty on the card offers the prospect of a replacement card, subject to a confirmation of fault

Increase Your MMC Space

Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks.
So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.

If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.

You will need a card reader to do this:-

1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk. (Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")

2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.

Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format. Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.

(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to MMC.

Now you will find that you will have more space.
256mb MMC got back 30+ mbs

Handy Tips

- At the top of the main-menu and every folder, the keys 1 to 9 are shortcuts to the icons 1-9

- A shortcut on the left menukey in standby-mode will take more time to open than a shortcut on the right menukey. Reason: The left key is also used for the keylock so it shortly waits for pressing the * button.

- While writing text press and hold "#" to switch between Alpha mode and Number mode. You can also press a key long to insert its number.

- In standby-mode, press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page.

- If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight to look at the time when it's dark without having to unlock the keypad.

- To check your current firmware version simply type *#0000# in standby screen.

- To check your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) type *#06# in standby screen.

- To check your Bluetooth device address type *#2820# in standby screen.

- Start up in Safe Mode (no 'auto start' apps will be running): Hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on until you have to enter your PIN code.

- Format the phone memory by typing *#7370# in standby screen.

- In standby mode,
45# + dials the number on your sim in memory slot 45.
50# + dials slot 50 and so on.

Backing up Phone Settings

If you ever come to a point when you need to hard format your phone or maybe upgrade to a new firmware, I'm sure definately would like to save the current settings of your phone. So this is what you should do;

How to backup phone settings to MMC.

Menu>Extras>Memory>Options>Backup phone mem.

Once the formatting or upgrading is done, you can then restore back the settings by doing;

Restoring settings after phone format.

Menu>Extras>Memory>Options>Restore from card.

Retrieve lost MMC password

1 Open file explorer. (SeleQ, FExplore, AppMan)

2 Search for 'MMCSTORE'

3 When you find it, send it to your PC

4 On PC, open the file with Notepad, or any word processor

5 there goes your password

Error of App Close Main! During Start Up

You can fix the app close main error..

1) Open your filemanager/explorer

2) Go to c:/system/bootdata & delete 'FirstBoot.dat'

3) Turn off phone & take out your MMC card

4) Turn on phone and put in current time/date

5) Wait for it to boot up then turn off phone again.

6) Put MMC back in and turn on phone.

FExplorer Tips & Tricks

* 'send command' fails new firmware with some new firmware, some users have reported that the 'send command' (thru bluetooth, IR, ...) fails; it's due to a 'copyrigth protection' introduced in the new OS (!!!!), this happens only with some kind of files (eg: .SIS), in such case, simply rename the file (eg: wtih .SIS_ ) before trying to send them.

Cant Uninstall Applications via Manager?

When you cant uninstall an application(most of the time Java games) using the Manager function of the phone, then do this;

1. Install FExplorer.

2. Launch it and goto the path/folder of the Application. I'm assuming you have install it to the MMC so the path would be something like,

E:\system\apps

and you will see lots of folders in there that is only labelled by numbers(for Java games/apps) or the name of the application. Go though them one by one. Open the text file in that folder to exactly know the name of the application in that particular folder if you dont see any icons or familiar name.

3. Then if its the correct folder, "move-out" of the folder, click on Options>File>Delete.

4. Then goto the Manager to uninstall it if its still listed.

5. Reboot.

Soft-reset

Its the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! Only the default phone settings are reset.
(will not reformat N70 but reset the settings.)

Follow this sequence :-

Tools->settings->phone->general->Orig. Phone settings
OR *#7370#

Hard reset: (Green Dial key, * key and No. 3)

- Turn off PIN code requests.
- Charge the phone fully.
- Turn off the phone.
- Remove the memory card (not really needed, but I usually do it to be on the safe side).
- Put the phone on a table (easier to press the keys then, in my opinion).
- Press the three keys and keep them securely down and do not release.
- While the keys are held down, turn the power on.
- Do not release the three keys until you see the prompt for the home city.

Full phone formatting on N70!

If you encounter situation like below on your Phone

1. Blank screen phone unable to reboot.
2. Phone only able to boot-up to "Nokia" word screen.
3. Install some program but not able to uninstall it after that.
4. Error messages such as "Child Installer" keeps popping-up.

Do a Full phone formatting ! as steps below,

1. Make sure you have at least 3/4 charge of battery power left.

2. Backup your contacts list and personal files to MMC memory card.

3. Switch-off your phone.

4. Press and hold 3 keys;

Green dial key, * (star key) & no. 3 key and then press the power on/off to swtich on the phone.

Remember, do not let go all of the keys and hold keys until you see a formatting word screen show!

5. After a few minutes when the Full phone formatting completed, your phone will back to original system and factory settting.

All apps installed & not of the phones' default will be lost. If you did a backup on your mmc, you can restore it back to the C drive again.

How To Reset The Operator Logo(if u have changed ur operator logo)

1) Go to the following dir :

C:\System\Apps\Phone\Oplogo

2) Delete any file in this directory

3) Restart the phone
Downloading & Installing Java Files

Java files can be a bit tricky at times. Most of the time, after you have downloaded and saved the java file on your pc, windows tend to change the icon & extension of the file into a .zip.

And this will led to those not familiar with this issue to extract the file. Once that is done, you will see a lot of folders and files. This is not the right way but ofcourse theres a way to get around this. Heres what you should do instead;

First, on your PCs, launch Windows Explorer and then select

Tools>Folder Options>View and "un-tick" the Hide extensions for known file type.

Now only can you see the full extension of a file and change the .zip into .jar and send it to your phone.

Repairing A Corruptted MMC

Correct Treatment of your MMC:

Physically, memory cards are quite fragile pieces of high technology, susceptible to damage from various silly things like excessive heat, condensation, strong magnetic fields, physical damage from rough handling and/or bending! (similar to most electronic devices then..)

Given the natue of mobile memory card products, they are constantly being taken in and out of some form of interface with a mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, or desktop PC, or a separate memory card reader. The number of different devices they have to be able to interact with is in the thousands.

It is not too surprisingly, then that sometimes the state of the file system on the memory card can get damaged.

This may happen for a number of different reasons, including:

/> removing the card from a device whilst an application is trying to read/write to it.. (Just be patient...)
/> battery drain on a device whilst in use meaning an insufficent voltage failure whilst writing to the card.
/> a poor implementation of the MMC standard on the device using the card
/> poor connectivity software drivers on the device or the Windows PC/Mac
/> physical damage like card or device being dropped, bent, getting wet etc...
/> lots of others i am sure..

As often as not, the problem is not terminal for your memory card, but just a software issue ( or in physical terms, it could be called "a temporary disalignment of the all the bits and bytes on the card").

The fix for this problem is the same as for any other file storage device (like a floppy or hard drive) with corrupt or invalid file system, namely; re-format the file system.

Use of A Proxy Website

One of the primary reasons people want to use a proxy is to get around blocked content that may contain some words that their network filter has identified as inappropriate. Many organisations make use of filters so that they can control how and what is viewed over their network. They usually do this to stop employees looking sites that are unrelated to their job description or to simply stop them from viewing inappropriate material. This is usually achieved by the use of keywords that is programmed into the web filter. The filter will simply block any web pages or site that contains these particular key words.

Although this may not necessarily block access to various websites that are job unrelated, they can also switch on access to pages and glossaries that are helpful in their job positions regardless of whether the key word is present or not. Filters these days are becoming ever ore sophisticated as the means to bypass web filters and get around network blocks are increasing and causing problems for networks.

If an employee of a company, or a student at a college, finds their Internet access blocked in some way they may choose to use a proxy website to get around this problem. Proxies are independent and the organisation cannot impose network restrictions outside of their network. As a proxy site does not take much longer than using a simple browser window, it is far quicker than calling technical support and trying to get authorization to remove specific sites from filter lists. This would be very time consuming and would thus cause problems and prevent the employees or students progressing with their work.

Some nations also use content filters to block their residents or citizens from finding certain information or material on the Internet that is not approved by their government or regime of power. Residents of such nations routinely use good proxy sites to access news and information from the outside world. Another good advantage of using proxies is that the IP address and other details of the user is not logged. This helps to make sure that the user can retain a degree of anonymity and privacy.

Websites that you visit online routinely record and log certain information about you and can even build up a profile of your surfing habits. The scary thing is that I or you do not know what they do with that information. Certain pieces of information is not a problem but some are, especially as websites are getting more sophisticated at tracing you and recording whatever details they do. The information that is recorded and stored and what they do with it varies from website to website. The most common pieces of information that are stored are your IP address, browser type, geographical location, your ISP, MAC address, referring site or webpage and many others. This is just a small list of what they can record about you.

Remove Item Types

Read Add Item Types, and delete or rename the subkey named ShellNew. Hit F5 to update the items in the New submenu.

Save color scheme

Export [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes\{Name of Scheme}]

Create tool tips for desktop icons.

Search the registry for keys with the name Info Tip. You may replace the descriptions and you may add Info Tip keys for other Class-IDs.

Create a button to Reboot Windows XP

To create a reboot icon on your desktop: Right click on an open area of the desktop Select New/Shortcut Enter in

3. Name it Lock Computer.

4. Right click and choose Properties.

5. Click on "Change Icon"

6. Search through shell32.dll in the System32 directory and find an appropriate lock icon.

NOTE: This effectively dumps you back to the "Welcome" log on screen. Of course this will only work if you have entered a password for your profile.

ADDENDUM: If you want added security, go to the Control Panel and click
on "User Accounts". Click "Change the way users log on or off", and
deselect the "Use the Welcome Screen" option.This will switch Windows

Soft-reset

Its the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! Only the default phone settings are reset.
(will not reformat N70 but reset the settings.)

Follow this sequence :-

Tools->settings->phone->general->Orig. Phone settings
OR *#7370#

Hard reset: (Green Dial key, * key and No. 3)

- Turn off PIN code requests.
- Charge the phone fully.
- Turn off the phone.
- Remove the memory card (not really needed, but I usually do it to be on the safe side).
- Put the phone on a table (easier to press the keys then, in my opinion).
- Press the three keys and keep them securely down and do not release.
- While the keys are held down, turn the power on.
- Do not release the three keys until you see the prompt for the home city.

Full phone formatting on N70!

If you encounter situation like below on your Phone

1. Blank screen phone unable to reboot.
2. Phone only able to boot-up to "Nokia" word screen.
3. Install some program but not able to uninstall it after that.
4. Error messages such as "Child Installer" keeps popping-up.

Do a Full phone formatting ! as steps below,

1. Make sure you have at least 3/4 charge of battery power left.

2. Backup your contacts list and personal files to MMC memory card.

3. Switch-off your phone.

4. Press and hold 3 keys;

Green dial key, * (star key) & no. 3 key and then press the power on/off to swtich on the phone.

Remember, do not let go all of the keys and hold keys until you see a formatting word screen show!

5. After a few minutes when the Full phone formatting completed, your phone will back to original system and factory settting.

All apps installed & not of the phones' default will be lost. If you did a backup on your mmc, you can restore it back to the C drive again.

How To Reset The Operator Logo(if u have changed ur operator logo)

1) Go to the following dir :

C:\System\Apps\Phone\Oplogo

2) Delete any file in this directory

3) Restart the phone
Downloading & Installing Java Files

Java files can be a bit tricky at times. Most of the time, after you have downloaded and saved the java file on your pc, windows tend to change the icon & extension of the file into a .zip.

And this will led to those not familiar with this issue to extract the file. Once that is done, you will see a lot of folders and files. This is not the right way but ofcourse theres a way to get around this. Heres what you should do instead;

First, on your PCs, launch Windows Explorer and then select

Tools>Folder Options>View and "un-tick" the Hide extensions for known file type.

Now only can you see the full extension of a file and change the .zip into .jar and send it to your phone.

Repairing A Corruptted MMC

Correct Treatment of your MMC:

Physically, memory cards are quite fragile pieces of high technology, susceptible to damage from various silly things like excessive heat, condensation, strong magnetic fields, physical damage from rough handling and/or bending! (similar to most electronic devices then..)

Given the natue of mobile memory card products, they are constantly being taken in and out of some form of interface with a mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, or desktop PC, or a separate memory card reader. The number of different devices they have to be able to interact with is in the thousands.

It is not too surprisingly, then that sometimes the state of the file system on the memory card can get damaged.

This may happen for a number of different reasons, including:

/> removing the card from a device whilst an application is trying to read/write to it.. (Just be patient...)
/> battery drain on a device whilst in use meaning an insufficent voltage failure whilst writing to the card.
/> a poor implementation of the MMC standard on the device using the card
/> poor connectivity software drivers on the device or the Windows PC/Mac
/> physical damage like card or device being dropped, bent, getting wet etc...
/> lots of others i am sure..

As often as not, the problem is not terminal for your memory card, but just a software issue ( or in physical terms, it could be called "a temporary disalignment of the all the bits and bytes on the card").

The fix for this problem is the same as for any other file storage device (like a floppy or hard drive) with corrupt or invalid file system, namely; re-format the file system.

Singapore Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton extended his lead in the world
championship despite finishing the Singapore Grand Prix third behind
winner Fernando Alonso of Renault.
The McLaren driver has a seven-point lead over Ferrari's Felipe Massa with three races remaining.
Massa led early on but finished 13th after a delay when he left the pits with his fuel hose still attached.
Alonso ended a season's frustration when a safety car period tallied perfectly with his team's strategy.
The double world champion had been quick all
weekend but qualified only 15th when a fuel pump problem stopped him
taking part in the second session.
Renault put him on a short first stint and he climbed up to 11th before an early stop on lap 12.
That meant that when the safety car came out after Alonso's
Renault team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr crashed on lap 15, the Spaniard was
alone in not having to stop for fuel and tyres.

I need a couple of days to realise that we could win a race this year, we have been so far from the top guys

Once everyone had stopped, Alonso was fifth behind Williams's Nico
Rosberg, Toyota's Jarno Trulli, Force India's Giancarlo Fisichella and
BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica.
But Rosberg and Kubica had to serve stop-go penalties for pitting while the pit lane was closed during the safety car period.
Trulli and Fisichella were on single-stop strategies but Alonso
had more than enough pace to ensure he made enough of a gap to ensure
he could make a second stop and stay ahead of them.
It was his first win since last year's Italian Grand Prix, when
he was driving for McLaren, a team he left after one season following a
tumultuous season as Hamilton's team-mate.
A second intervention by the safety car closed the field up for
the last 10 laps but Alonso was always in control and he finished ahead

Massa had looked set to dominate, leading away from pole position
and pulling away from Hamilton in the early stages of the race.
But when Massa stopped for fuel and tyres under the safety car,
he was given a green light to leave the pits from Ferrari's pit
equipment before the refuelling hose had been detached.
The Brazilian pulled away, knocked over a mechanic, and tore the refuelling hose away from the equipment.
He had to stop at the end of the pit lane and wait for his
mechanics to sprint down and remove it before he could rejoin the race
at the back.
Massa's afternoon was then made even worse when he was given a drive-through penalty for leaving his pit dangerously.
Hamilton dropped back behind the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and
David Coulthard when most of the field stopped during the safety car
period.
But the gearbox on Webber's car failed and Hamilton passed Coulthard just before his final stop on lap 42.
That left the Englishman third behind Alonso and Rosberg when a
second safety car period following an accident to Force India's Adrian
Sutil on lap 51 closed the field right up.
Alonso's 20-second lead was reduced to nothing, but he got a
jump on Rosberg as the race re-started and pulled away again to secure
the win.
Hamilton tracked Rosberg to the finish but, with the
championship at stake and Massa not scoring, preferred not to take any
risks in pursuit of an extra couple of points and secure the six for
third place.

Hamilton had plenty to celebrate after finishing third

"I enjoyed driving here and I'm pretty happy," Hamilton said. "It was a tough weekend but we got some good points."
The first safety car period was as unlucky for Rosberg as it was
lucky for Alonso - he was forced to come in when the pit lane was
closed because it was the lap for his scheduled first stop and he would
have run out of fuel had he stayed out.
But he was able to run long enough after the re-start to
establish enough of a lead before serving his penalty to lose a place
only to Alonso.
"When I saw the safety car coming out on the lap I was due to
pit, I was like: 'This is not possible - it's every single time',"
Rosberg said.
"I was really annoyed until I was able to pull a big enough gap afterwards."

BANGALORE: This is one of those landmark happenings on India’s slow
but steady road to connecting all its billion-plus citizens — yet three
weeks after its low-key launch, not many know about it.

The nation’s biggest public phone provider, BSNL, has made dial-up
Internet access free for all landline customers. There is no
registration, no hassle.

How to go about it

If you have a BSNL telephone connection, it will be simple to set
up the free account using the standard options of the browser, once you
have plugged the telephone jack into your PC or laptop. Against “User
name” or “User identification,” enter your telephone number preceded by
the STD code minus the zero (for example, if you live in Chennai and
your phone number is 23456789, your User ID is 4423456789). Against
“password,” enter your telephone number (example 23456789). You are all
set to browse the Internet through the all-India dial-up number 172222.

When we tried out the free service, we obtained speeds quite close
to the maximum you can expect with a dial-up modem which is 56 kilo
bits per second — and a good bit faster than some paid dial-up
services!

Of course, you pay local call charges for the duration of the
surfing, but this is much less at off-peak hours BSNL has partnered
with the Ahmedabad-based Elitecore Solutions, which already provides
the billing solution for its Net One service as a franchisee.

Anil Jain, BSNL’s Deputy Director-General for Broadband, told The Hindu that
over 1,000 users had signed up daily since the launch. The scheme is
promised till October-end, but there are indications that it will be
extended.

This is a clever way to increase the number of landline subscribers.
But why look a gift-horse in the mouth? Free Internet is something few
nations have ever offered — and to do this across a country as big as

BANGALORE: The travails of air travel — including soaring fares —
has persuaded many companies to hold teleconferences bringing together
executives across multiple locations in a voice or video network

Typically it can cost a few thousand rupees to set up an audio
conference for about half an hour, through specialist providers. Now, a
canny duo of tech entrepreneurs – Sabeer Bhatia, the man who created
Hotmail and Yogesh Patel, his partner in many subsequent start-ups have
made it possible for lay users to set up a basic audio conference
network of their own — for free.

It is called Sabse Bolo — talk to everyone — and within months of
creating (there are also some paid versions, with more features) over
one lakh users have signed up.

Once you register at the site ( www.sabsebolo.com),
you receive a conference identification number and PIN (personal
identification number), which you can share by email with all those you
want linked. You also share the access phone number to log in at the
conference. When all participants are logged in, you can carry out the
conference by voice phone.

Local number

Last week Sabse Bolo added a local number for users in Bangalore, in
addition to the earlier Mumbai number. Obviously any one can dial in –
but people outside these two cities will have to make long distance
calls.

The developers plan on adding other cities to their local call roster.

The service might not seem terribly interesting to lay users,
(unless they want to set up an annual family talkathon!); but small
businesses and groups of professionals will find ready use for this
free tool.

REMOTE KEYBOARD: Logitech’s diNovo Mini, combines the functions of a PC keyboard and a TV remote.
Bangalore: There was a time when the separate worlds of the personal computer and the television set gave rise to two modes of usage. There was the ‘lean back’ style of typical TV viewing, where one sat back comfortably on a sofa, a few metres away from the screen, ‘remote’ in hand. The other was the ‘lean forward’ style of the PC user, hunched over keyboard and mouse, up close to the monitor.

All that is changing, as a new category is born: users of wall-mountable large screen PCs, or TVs which also include an Internet connection. They want to have the best of both worlds, enjoying the multiple TV channels that their cable or satellite dish provider offers; and switching at will, to surfing the Internet or checking their mail — sometimes splitting the screen to do both at the same time!

This is great — but there is a small hassle: You need a ‘remote’ to do your TV channel surfing; and a keyboard-mouse combo, to access the PC and Web browser features. Things can get quite messy, especially if your PC peripheral devices are not wireless. Out of this pain, is born a device like Logitech’s diNovo Mini, a clever, palm-sized tool, that neatly combines the functions of keyboard, mouse and remote.

The diNovo is a featherweight at 650 gm. and is only slightly larger than one of those old-fashioned spectacle cases. Even as you flip the lid open, the orange back lighting kicks in. This indicates that it is ready to use like a standard PC keyboard, complete with full QWERTY key pad. The mouse pad is similar to what you would find on a notebook PC. Flip a slide switch from PC to TV mode and the back lighting changes to green, highlighting the portions of the keyboard that perform the functions you would find with a TV or media player remote. The touch pad of the PC avatar, now morphs into a directional pad in its TV role: you can use it to move in four directions to make on-screen menu selections.

To wirelessly link the diNovo to the PC-TV, the makers harness Bluetooth and provide a suitable ‘dongle’ — a USB-type plug-in that you insert in a suitable slot in the PC or TV. Its range is about 8-10 metres and the rechargeable lithium batteries in the diNovo are rated to work for one month between charges.

The device costs Rs. 9,495 from Logitech’s national distributors, Rashi Peripherals — which works out about double what you would pay for Logitech’s own cordless standard PC mouse-keyboard set. Not cheap — but when you launch into a new customer category that merges lean back functions into lean forward, you have to pay for the privilege of being a pioneer!

Soft-reset

Its the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! Only the default phone settings are reset.
(will not reformat N70 but reset the settings.)

Follow this sequence :-

Tools->settings->phone->general->Orig. Phone settings
OR *#7370#

Hard reset: (Green Dial key, * key and No. 3)

- Turn off PIN code requests.
- Charge the phone fully.
- Turn off the phone.
- Remove the memory card (not really needed, but I usually do it to be on the safe side).
- Put the phone on a table (easier to press the keys then, in my opinion).
- Press the three keys and keep them securely down and do not release.
- While the keys are held down, turn the power on.
- Do not release the three keys until you see the prompt for the home city.

Full phone formatting on N70!

If you encounter situation like below on your Phone

1. Blank screen phone unable to reboot.
2. Phone only able to boot-up to "Nokia" word screen.
3. Install some program but not able to uninstall it after that.
4. Error messages such as "Child Installer" keeps popping-up.

Do a Full phone formatting ! as steps below,

1. Make sure you have at least 3/4 charge of battery power left.

2. Backup your contacts list and personal files to MMC memory card.

3. Switch-off your phone.

4. Press and hold 3 keys;

Green dial key, * (star key) & no. 3 key and then press the power on/off to swtich on the phone.

Remember, do not let go all of the keys and hold keys until you see a formatting word screen show!

5. After a few minutes when the Full phone formatting completed, your phone will back to original system and factory settting.

All apps installed & not of the phones' default will be lost. If you did a backup on your mmc, you can restore it back to the C drive again.

How To Reset The Operator Logo(if u have changed ur operator logo)

1) Go to the following dir :

C:\System\Apps\Phone\Oplogo

2) Delete any file in this directory

3) Restart the phone
Downloading & Installing Java Files

Java files can be a bit tricky at times. Most of the time, after you have downloaded and saved the java file on your pc, windows tend to change the icon & extension of the file into a .zip.

And this will led to those not familiar with this issue to extract the file. Once that is done, you will see a lot of folders and files. This is not the right way but ofcourse theres a way to get around this. Heres what you should do instead;

First, on your PCs, launch Windows Explorer and then select

Tools>Folder Options>View and "un-tick" the Hide extensions for known file type.

Now only can you see the full extension of a file and change the .zip into .jar and send it to your phone.

Repairing A Corruptted MMC

Correct Treatment of your MMC:

Physically, memory cards are quite fragile pieces of high technology, susceptible to damage from various silly things like excessive heat, condensation, strong magnetic fields, physical damage from rough handling and/or bending! (similar to most electronic devices then..)

Given the natue of mobile memory card products, they are constantly being taken in and out of some form of interface with a mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, or desktop PC, or a separate memory card reader. The number of different devices they have to be able to interact with is in the thousands.

It is not too surprisingly, then that sometimes the state of the file system on the memory card can get damaged.

This may happen for a number of different reasons, including:

/> removing the card from a device whilst an application is trying to read/write to it.. (Just be patient...)
/> battery drain on a device whilst in use meaning an insufficent voltage failure whilst writing to the card.
/> a poor implementation of the MMC standard on the device using the card
/> poor connectivity software drivers on the device or the Windows PC/Mac
/> physical damage like card or device being dropped, bent, getting wet etc...
/> lots of others i am sure..

As often as not, the problem is not terminal for your memory card, but just a software issue ( or in physical terms, it could be called "a temporary disalignment of the all the bits and bytes on the card").

The fix for this problem is the same as for any other file storage device (like a floppy or hard drive) with corrupt or invalid file system, namely; re-format the file system.

Lock ur files & folders by juz changin d name of d folder using any file explorer pgms like X-plore, FExplorer, SeleQ, etc..
Protect ur file explorer pgms with password, so nobody can rename locked folder except u... locked folder cant b renamed e1 4m file manager..

Method1:

suppose original name of folder="magic"
1)Locked folder = "old folder name" + "any name" + "."
e.g.: "magic123."
2)Locked folder = "any name" + "."
e.g.: "abc."

Method2:

1)Locked folder = " " + "..." (which can give many dots, but a few dots are better)
e.g.: " ..."
2)Locked folder = "." + "old folder name" + "."
e.g.: ".magic."
3)Locked folder = "." + "any name" + "."
e.g.: ".abc."
4)Locked folder = " " + "." + "any name" + "."
e.g.: " .abc."

* you can give any name to your folder to hide the contents (better to keep the folder in very inside path like, "e:\system\apps\magic")
* if you access the locked folder using any file explorer OR built-in file manager OR even from gallery, your program will get closed or show error message, you cant access locked folder or files.
*U can even lock any apps by renamin ther pgm folders(e.g. e:\system\apps\smartmovie)

* After you locked your secret folder you CAN'T see any audios or videos or images of that folder using any programs like Gallery, File Manager, Smart Movie, DivX Player, DVD Player, MP3 Player, Power Mp3, etc..
* Method1 is safest method, coz, you can access the contents of locked folder using card reader too (chance to get data back) but not from phone..
* Use Method2 if you want a perfect lock that can't access from both phone and card reader.

Tip One

Do u know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)? Heres how... in the inbox for example; u wanna delete multiple sms, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked sms. The edit button can also b used to copy and past text in sms, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. pretty good for placing song names in ngages

Tip Two

Shit happens, on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and tis calls for a format of fone. to format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone. NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disatrous.

I heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i tink.for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*> and Call (Send) buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. this method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code would be reset to default 12345.

Tip Three

TO NGAGE USERS; Did u know u can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Juz plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on e: (the mmc), not in any folders, root of e:, disconnect, then look for it in manager.

Tip Four

Save on battery and system memory being used by regulary checking the task manager which can be accessed by holding down the menu button!!

Tip 4a:

Set the screen saver to a short time out period to prolong battery life.

Tip 4b:

Avoid restarting the phone, or repeatedly turning it on and off. This helps increase battery life.

Tip 5

Type *#06# to display your IMEI serial number, very valuable for the unlocking your phone to other sim cards

Type *#0000# to view which firmware version you are running

If you would like to avoid being "blue jacked", keep bluetooth turned off, or set your phone's visibility to hidden.

First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate Bluetooth as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres. So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone.

Nokia original version (without your operator’s personalization) with
NSU (Nokia Software Update – the official Nokia program).

NSU reads the product code of your phone and it searches its database for a
newer version of the corresponding firmware in order to upgrade it.
This is why you will need to change the product code of your phone into
a non-branded product code, before running NSU.

Install NSS
Install NSU
Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
Open NSS and click on “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
Click on the icon « Phone info »
Click on “Scan”
Open « gsm-magic » without closing NSS, then push the button « Enable » of “gsm-magic”.

As you can see, now you can change the product code (on the right of the « phone info » window of NSS). For a Nokia 6680, type the product code 0521637 (this is the product code for France!) and then mark the case
“Enable”.

Now press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !). Close NSS and “gsm-magic” and you can proceed now with the NSU flashing.

When the flashing with NSU is over, start-up your phone and you’ll have the
pleasant surprise that your phone’s firmware is the latest Nokia non-branded firmware in date!

NOTE: I advise you to disable any antivirus and firewall on your PC during the flashing.

In order to find out the product code for other phone models, download the
firmware for your phone model, connect your phone to NSS, click « Scan », then « Flash », and after that look for your product code when on « Market » you will see your country. China Launches Spacewalk Mission

SHANGHAI — The Chinese Shenzhou VII spacecraft blasted off at 9:07 p.m.
Thursday, carrying three Chinese astronauts into space on this country’s third manned space mission in five years.

The three-day mission is expected to include the country’s first attempt at a spacewalk.
The Chinese government has spent billions of dollars in recent years building up a space program that it hopes will help China establish a space station by 2020 and eventually will put a man on the moon, accomplishments that would certainly bring the country international prestige.
The launching of Shenzhou VII from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu
Province, which is in western China, was shown live on state television.
At a ceremony before the launching, President Hu Jintao praised the space project’s effort. “You will definitely accomplish this glorious and sacred mission,” he told the astronauts before the launching. “The motherland and the people are looking forward to your triumphant return.”
China sent into space three experienced fighter pilots, all of them 42-year-old men. One is expected to walk in space for 30 minutes on Friday or Saturday, according to the state media.
The three taikonauts — the Chinese term for astronauts —plan to run tests in space and launch a small satellite monitoring station. They are carrying traditional Chinese medicine on board, in case of sickness, and their diet includes shredded pork sautéed with garlic and grilled beef with spicy sauce.
One astronaut is wearing what the state-run news media has dubbed “the most complicated,advanced and expensive suit in the world,” a $4.4 million space suit designed and produced in China. The spacecraft was launched by what the Chinese space agency calls the Long March II-F carrier rocket, which
took the spacecraft into a low orbit, about 210 miles above Earth. The mission, which is being covered extensively in the Chinese media, is another milestone for a country that got a late start in space exploration but is now aggressively launching commercial satellites,putting humans in space and even shooting down aging satellites.
“They have joined a very exclusive club; only the U.S. and Russians are members,” said Roger D. Launius, a senior curator and expert on space history at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, referring generally to China’s space program. “It’s a great start, even though it’s nowhere near what the Russians and the U.S. have accomplished with space flight.”
Russia and the United States conducted their first spacewalks in 1965, and in 1969 the United States became the first country to put a person on the moon.
But Michael D. Griffin, the administrator of NASA,has repeatedly warned that despite the head start by other nations, the Chinese program is moving swiftly and could overtake American efforts to return to the moon by 2020. In testimony to the Senate last year,Mr. Griffin said it was likely that “China will be able to put people on the Moon before we will be able to get back.” He added: “I admire what they have done, but I am concerned that it will leave the United States in its wake.”
The Chinese government also hopes the national space program will aid the nation economically by helping to create technological breakthroughs that may someday be applied to computers or other digital equipment.
India and Japan are now aggressively developing their own space programs, creating some competition in Asia for space flight, and the Europeans have joined forces to explore space.
But China says its space program is speeding along, often with Chinese technology, helping establish the country as a technological power and bringing another dose of pride to the nation after the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer.
Because spaceflight requires large booster rockets and other sophisticated
technology that often has military applications, national space programs are often veiled in secrecy, and cooperation among nations is complicated.
Indeed, on Wednesday, the F.B.I. arrested a Chinese-born physicist in Newport News, Va., on charges of illegally exporting space launching technical data and services to China beginning in January 2003. The physicist, Shu Quan-Sheng, 68, was born in China but was a naturalized American citizen. He has a doctorate in physics.
Mr. Shu was also accused of offering bribes to Chinese government officials in exchange for a business contract, according to an F.B.I. statement.
